Smarter BeeOtels: new IoT sensors to monitor ecosystem health
The BeeOmetrics team is buzzing with excitement: our BeeOtels just got a major upgrade with new IoT kits to supercharge their data collection capabilities. Even better, this week we installed our 30th kit!
These integrated sensors allow us to collect a wider range of environmental data to complement our biodiversity monitoring through the project. In addition to pollinator, soil and plant data collected in and around the BeeOtels, these kits now provide continuous measurements of:
-
Air quality indicators such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), ammonia (NH₃), and fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10), which can affect both human and ecosystem health
-
Microclimatic data including temperature and humidity
-
And soon, bee activity itself, using bioaccoustics
This multi-layered approach brings us closer to a full-picture understanding of ecosystem health at the parcel level. It also opens new scientific opportunities to link pollution, biodiversity, and pollinator behaviour in real time.
As the BeeOmetrics team continues to test and refine these technologies, stay tuned for more updates as we push forward the frontier of biomonitoring!
