A new design for a new phase of the BeeOmetrics project
Learning from the experience of two years of data collection in the field, the BeeOmetrics team worked hard, and Spring/Summer 2026 brings a new generation of BeeOtel, co-designed with LivinWood and Bout2Bois.
The redesigned BeeOtel now includes an integrated emergence box that safely stores occupied tubes over winter, so cavity-nesting bees, which lay their eggs one year but only emerge as adults the next, complete their full life cycle undisturbed.
This new design also marks a bigger shift. After three years of development and more than 240 BeeOtels deployed across Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Poland, and the United States, BeeOmetrics, our EIC-funded R&D project, is officially entering its commercial phase. BeeOtel is now a field-ready solution for companies that need more than satellite indices and desktop models to back up their nature-positive commitments.
BeeOtels collect plot-level data on biodiversity and pollution by using wild bees as bioindicators: real insects, in real ecosystems, producing ground-truth data that holds up in a boardroom or a CSRD report. For biodiversity and sustainability teams, that means credible, science-backed indicators tied to a specific site, biodiversity data tangible enough to engage stakeholders, and a monitoring tool designed to scale alongside growing reporting needs.
The new design is also a reminder that substance and craftsmanship go hand in hand. Each BeeOtel is handcrafted and maintained by Bout2Bois, the carpentry workshop of Ferme Nos Pilifs, an inclusive workplace built around meaningful, high-quality manual work.
